At North I was presented with the task of turning an engineering proof of concept into a consumer viable product. My approach was to streamline the product experience, creating a familiar form factor to make the technology as appropriate for everyday wear as possible. By contrasting simple, nostalgic design with a very complex and futuristic technology, I managed to deliver a product that felt elegant and grounded, a challenging feat in the wearables space.
Styling was critical to the success of Focals so I developed 2 unisex silhouettes, a Classic and Round in three versatile color ways. Each frame came with vintage-styled sun clips to assist with outdoor wear, in satin black and rose gold toned stainless steel.
The optics presented a stringent requirement for pupillary alignment, making fit a critical component of the design. To achieve excellent aesthetic and functional fits, I worked with a cross-functional team to develop a proprietary algorithmic fitting system that married machine learning with ophthalmic standards to easily size customers.
